DART Hosts Opening Event for Malcolm X Boulevard Transfer Location

DART, City of Dallas officials and community leaders celebrated the opening of the Malcolm X Boulevard Transfer Location on Friday, April 23.
The new transfer location will enhance connections between bus routes serving the South Dallas community. Beginning Monday, May 17, the new transfer location will be served by routes 2, 35 and 44 - which transport, among them, more than 9,600 passengers a day.
The transfer location in South Dallas will also provide a direct link to DART's growing network of transit services, including DART Rail and the Trinity Railway Express. "This new facility is a product of the relationship between DART and the community — residents, students, local business owners and community leaders," said DART Chairman Huelon A. Harrison. "We are excited about the prospect of injecting new life into this area." True Community Partnership The facility, which is partially enclosed and totally covered, is the first development of its kind for DART: an off-street enhanced shelter. It features seating, telephones, air ventilation, passenger information and infrared heaters, and will serve as a model for future transfer locations. The Malcolm X Boulevard Transfer Location is part of the Malcolm X Bus Corridor amenities program, which comprises two additional projects along Malcolm X Boulevard. The first project, the Malcolm X Model Block, was completed last year and is located between Peabody and Pennsylvania avenues. It features two on-street enhanced shelters and landscaping. The third Malcolm X Bus Corridor project, now under way, includes wayside shelters and benches. The Malcolm X Bus Corridor is the first of several planned DART Bus Corridors, intended to duplicate some of the success of DART Rail through improvements such as increased bus speeds, increased bus frequencies and creating favorable waiting environments for bus passengers.
