Special Safety Message

Silver Line Safety Enhancements for At-Grade Crossings, Line-of-Sight Solution, and Emergency Vehicle Access

Safety is paramount to DART and the people we serve, and means everything to the families, residents, and businesses near the Silver Line alignment. With Silver Line and all other DART services, we are committed to safety and innovation. This is why the Silver Line team is using the most recent technologies and innovative design processes to complete the project and create the best combination of safety measures. The result will be a world-class rail line that meets the needs of all who use and enjoy it.

The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) identified that all public at-grade crossings along the Silver Line corridor will be protected by standard safety features including flashing lights, bells, and gate arms alerting vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians of approaching trains. The FEIS also included consideration of enhanced safety features in addition to the standard at-grade crossing elements.

Read more below to learn about Silver Line safety enhancements for at-grade crossings, the line-of-sight solution, and emergency vehicle access. These are all DART recommendations that go beyond FEIS requirements. All cities must agree to the recommendations and submit final application.

Safety Enhancements

At-Grade Crossings

  1. All pedestrian gates will have drop chains where requested in the field diagnostic report.
  2. DART will work with city staff from all cities on appropriate locations for traffic signage through the design process. This will include the requested illuminated advanced warning signs.
  3. DART will work with city staff from all cities to perform an illumination study for areas of concern using a set of mutually agreed, currently established standards/requirements.
  4. DART will build a 6-ft sidewalk within DART right-of-way and will provide a reasonable transition to existing sidewalk width immediately adjacent to DART right-of-way.
  5. DART has conducted a sight triangle analysis at all areas of sight distance concerns.

Emergency Vehicle Access

It is anticipated that approximately 56 Silver Line trains will traverse the corridor daily. All crossing events are anticipated to be 30 to 50 seconds, which is the typical crossing gate down-time. With three trains an hour in each direction, the crossing is expected to be closed approximately five minutes out of every hour. Alternate routes for fire and emergency service vehicles operating near at-grade crossings will be evaluated as part of the final design phase working with emergency responders from all partner cities. Final design of the project will be done in accordance with National Fire Protection Association NFPA-130 (Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Railway Systems), as well as the applicable building codes of all cities.

Stay Alert and Stay Safe

Construction safety tips

Follow these 10 construction safety tips

  1. Look up, stay alert -- phones, video games and other electronic devices can be distracting.
  2. Remove an earbud or turn down the volume. Headphones can keep you from hearing approaching bulldozers, dump trucks and other construction vehicles.
  3. Do not walk, ride, run, hang out or play in construction zones or work areas, as heavy machinery and debris pose dangers.
  4. Use sidewalks or designated paths and be aware of sidewalk closures or temporary walkways.
  5. Cross only at designated crosswalks, as construction vehicles make sudden stops and wide turns.
  6. Make eye contact with construction vehicles before crossing -- see and be seen.
  7. Observe all construction signs and warnings.
  8. Keep away from construction fencing and traffic cones -- they're there to protect you.
  9. Watch out for falling objects, dust and other hazards.

Special Safety Tips for Rail Crossings

  1. Always expect a train. Passenger and freight trains are quieter and faster than you think and can run from either direction, especially in quiet zones.
  2. Walking on or beside railroad tracks is dangerous and illegal.
  3. Never pass flashing lights or go around lowered gates. Always wait until lights have stopped flashing and gates are completely raised.
  4. Wait to cross until you can see clearly in both directions. Multiple tracks may mean multiple trains.
  5. When driving, always allow enough space for your vehicle to completely clear a rail crossing before proceeding -- not just the tracks.
