Ride DART and enjoy no traffic, no parking, no hassle

Trip to Texas State Fair turns "green" starting September 25

View bigtex.com in a new windowThe newest ride at the 2009 State Fair of Texas is Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) Rail Green Line as visitors enjoy the return of rail service to Deep Ellum, Baylor, Fair Park and South Dallas after an absence of more than 50 years.

It's "All Aboard for Food and Fun!" as visitors from all across the country ride the Green Line to either Fair Park Station, located on Parry Avenue at the entrance to the fairgrounds, or MLK, Jr. Station, located south of R.B. Cullum Blvd. and convenient to the MLK fairground entrance (Gate 6) and the Cotton Bowl Stadium.

Passengers riding DART Rail and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) to downtown Dallas can transfer easily to the Green Line:

  • Southbound Red and Blue Line passengers transfer to the Green Line at Pearl Station.
  • Northbound Red and Blue Line passengers transfer to the Green Line at Akard Station.
  • TRE passengers transfer to the Green Line at Victory Station. TRE will operate a Saturday schedule on Saturdays and Sundays during the Fair.
A Day Pass is the best transit value. The Local Day pass, which provides unlimited service on Red, Blue and Green Line trains and local buses, is $4. Dallas County customers who use the Trinity Railway Express or DART On-Call or FLEX service should purchase the DART System Day Pass for $5. Tarrant County customers of the TRE should purchase the $7.50 Regional Day Pass. The price of the Reduced Day Pass for children ages 5-14, and seniors (65 and older) is $2.

Advance Discount State Fair of Texas Tickets with a DART Pass
The DART/State Fair Combo Ticket, available only at participating Kroger Food Stores, is a $19 value for $16.

Buy a ticket to the Fair and ride DART to Fair Park. The price includes one-time State Fair admission and transportation on DART Rail and local buses on date of use.

Big Tex Express
On Saturdays and Sundays, motorists can ride the free "Big Tex Express" train between auxiliary parking at the fairgrounds to a gate near the Cotton Bowl. The State Fair of Texas offers acres of lighted and secured parking off Haskell west of Dolphin Road -- easily accessible from I-30. Parking is $10. The service operates continuously from 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Note: This service does not run to Tarrant County.

Highlights of the 2009 State Fair of Texas
Enjoy two weekends of college football in the Cotton Bowl Stadium: Grambling State University will meet Prairie View A&M University in the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic on Saturday, October 3 and the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners play Saturday, October 17 in the AT&T Red River Rivalry.

To help accommodate the expected large crowds, DART is adding Red and/or Blue Line trains and detouring some of them directly to Fair Park Station (service varies by event). Details about all DART services during the fair are available at www.DART.org/StateFair. Information is also available at 214-979-1111.

Fair Park - Vintage Streetcar Video circa 1953

Fair Park saw its last rail service on January 15, 1956, when the 12-Second line was converted to bus operation. This route ran from downtown Dallas through Deep Ellum on Main to Exposition, then past Fair Park in the same path the Green Line will travel. It then turned south on old Second Avenue to Hatcher Street, roughly parallel to the Green Line right of way.

At one time, there were four sets of tracks in front of the Fairgrounds where the DART Fair Park Station is located, and they were all utilized during the State Fair and for the Cotton Bowl.
