New LBJ HOV lanes opening Monday

A 12-mile extension of the I-635 (LBJ Freeway) HOV lane -- from U.S. 75 (Central Expressway) to I-30 -- opens Monday, January 28, roughly doubling the length of HOV lanes in one of the nation's busiest freeway corridors.

The new LBJ lanes, which will operate in both directions 24 hours a day, are the latest phase in the regional expansion of DART's HOV network, which will add about 50 miles to the existing 40-mile network.

The expansion began July 31 with the opening of a 15-mile managed HOV lane on I-30 West (Tom Landry Highway) -- between the Dallas/Tarrant County Line and Loop 12 -- that eventually will stretch between Dallas and Fort Worth. That lane is open to westbound traffic from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and for eastbound traffic from 3:30 to 7 p.m.

On December 17, a six-mile extension of the I-30 East R. L. Thornton HOV lane opened from Jim Miller to Northwest Drive in Mesquite. The lane -- which extends to Downtown Dallas -- uses movable barriers and Barrier Transfer Vehicles, commonly referred to as "zipper trucks," to create westbound HOV lanes from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and eastbound lanes from 3:30 to 7 p.m.

A new 14-mile HOV lane extending north from the "High Five" interchange on I-635 LBJ to Exchange Parkway in Allen opened December 21. The US 75 HOV lane features a direct "connector" between the HOV lanes on LBJ Freeway and the new Central Expressway HOV lanes, enabling motorists to transfer easily from one to the other. The top level of the "High Five" interchange is dedicated to HOV lane use only.

HOV lanes are open to vehicles with two or more occupants, buses, motorcycles and other eligible vehicles. The current HOV network supports more than 115,000 commuter trips each weekday. Commuters typically save one minute of travel time per mile of HOV lane.

Call 214-979-1111 for more information on using the new lanes or visit www.DART.org/HOV.
