A safe commute is the best commute. DART’s top priority is safety, and we continually evaluate our processes and procedures to ensure a safe and secure system.

10 Tips

  1. Stop, look and listen for DART vehicles.
  2. Cross the street or track at designated crosswalks only.
  3. Do not text, talk or game on your mobile device while walking.
  4. Children should always exit the bus through the front door.
  5. Never walk, ride or play on or near railroad tracks.
  6. Always stand behind the white bumpy strips on rail platforms.
  7. Be careful when driving or turning across train track.
  8. Never try to beat a train through a crossing.
  9. Adults should not text, talk or game on their mobile devices while driving.
  10. Remember: Safety begins with you. Talk to your family.

DART Safety Star Certificate

I certify that I have read and understood these tips. My plan is to make safety a good habit!

Bus Safety Tips

When you're walking...

  1. Always stop, look, and listen for buses before crossing the street - cross only at crosswalks and be sure to look both ways.
  2. Don't stand on the street or stand in front of a bus - the driver may not see you or be able to stop in time.

When you're in a car...

  1. Be careful when passing a stopped bus - passengers may be exiting and crossing the street.
  2. Always obey all traffic signs and signals; drive carefully when sharing the road with a bus.
  3. Remember: buses can't stop as quickly as you can.

If you have children...

  1. Talk to them about buses - teach them the importance of riding them safely - "Stop, look and listen" is an important message for them to understand.
  2. Hold children's hands when crossing the street.
  3. Take a field trip, go exploring, schedule a time to show your children how to ride a bus.

When you're waiting for a bus...

  1. Remember: Buses stop for customers standing at bus stops - you do not need to wave at the bus operator to have them stop.
  2. As a bus approaches, be sure you are standing away from the street - and never, ever try to board a moving bus.

If you're a kid...

  1. Don't ever play, skate or ride your bike too closely to a bus or bus stop.
  2. Only exit the bus through the front door.
  3. Never walk in front of or behind a bus.
  4. Be safe and help others to be safe around DART buses.
  5. Make sure that everyone in your family knows all these safety rules.

Rail Safety Tips

When you're walking...

  1. Always stop, look, and listen for trains before crossing the tracks - cross only at crosswalks and be sure to look both ways.
  2. Don't stand on the tracks or step in front of a train - the operator may not see you or be able to stop in time.
  3. Always stand behind the textured warning strips on rail platforms.

When you're in a car...

  1. Never race a train to a crossing - you will never have a second chance if you lose.
  2. Be careful turning across train tracks - it's where more accidents happen.
  3. Always obey all traffic signs and signals; never assume you have the right-of-way - and look both ways before crossing.
  4. Expect a train on any track at any time - if a train goes by, watch out for a second one - and be sure to look in both directions.
  5. Never stop your car on train tracks - if you stall or get stuck, get everyone out of the vehicle and off the tracks.
  6. Don't anticipate lights or creep out at rail intersections - and never, ever drive around the crossing gates.
  7. Remember: Trains can't stop as quickly as you can.
  8. Remember: Many vehicles are required to stop at all rail crossings.
  9. If you're on a motorcycle or bike, be sure to cross tracks at a 90 degree angle - and follow all the above safety rules as well.

When you're near overhead power lines...

  1. Always keep things like kites and ladders away from the overhead lines - and never, ever touch a power line that is down.

When you're waiting for a train...

  1. Remember: Trains stop at every station - there is no need to wave at the operator so they will stop.
  2. As a train approaches, be sure you are behind the textured warning strips - and never, ever try to catch a moving train. Another will be along in a few minutes.

If you're a kid...

  1. Don't ever walk, play, skate or ride your bike on or around light rail tracks.
  2. Never walk in a construction area.
  3. Make sure that everyone in your family knows all these safety rules.
  4. Be safe and help others to be safe around DART light rail.

If you have children...

  1. Talk to them about light rail - teach them the importance of crossing the tracks safely - "Stop, look and listen" is an important message for them to understand.
  2. Teach them about electricity and that playing near light rail overhead wires, especially flying a kite, is very dangerous.
  3. Hold children's hands when crossing the street.
  4. Take a field trip, go exploring, schedule a time to show your children light rail tracks and the areas where it is safe to be and those where it is not safe.
