Media Relations Contact: March 18, 2010 DART hopes rally boosts census participation Speakers at the rally included DART Board Chairman Bill Velasco, President/Executive Director Gary Thomas, Regional Census Director Gabriel Sanchez and Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano. Employees were given an opportunity to tour a U. S. Census Bureau traveling public exhibit and see a DART bus wrapped with Census 2010 information. DART's Thomas told employees that making sure DART gets its fair share of the billions in available funding is reason enough to ensure as accurate a count as possible. "We need to make everyone aware of the importance of the census," Thomas said. "If we do not get a good accurate count from the region, funding local transportation projects will miss out," he said. "Everyone needs to understand that this will affect our quality of life for the next 10 years." Eight specially wrapped buses will be used to spread the word about the census across DART's 13 member cities. The Census Bureau began mailing out census forms on March 15. Forms are due by April 1.
