Media Contact: November 25, 1997 Trinity Railway Express Commuter rail service growing The Trinity Railway Express commuter rail line is rolling out a new schedule to serve passengers all day long.Starting Monday, December 15, the Trinity Railway Express adds hourly midday and evening service on weekdays between the South Irving Transit Center (Rock Island Road and O'Connor) and Union Station in downtown Dallas with an intermediate stop at Medical/Market Center Station near Parkland Memorial Hospital. Another scheduled train is being added during morning and afternoon weekday rush hours, generating 20 more trips -- for a total of 50 trips -- each weekday. As a special feature for fans of the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars, the last train leaving Union Station will be held there for the completion of week night games played at Reunion Arena. On other weeknights, the last train will leave Union Station at 10:35 p.m. The Trinity Railway Express commuter rail line took to the tracks on December 30, 1996. Already nearly 1,300 passengers count on the Trinity Railway Express every work day. The initial 10-mile segment to Irving is Phase I of a 37-mile commuter line that will extend to Fort Worth in 1999, with service to D/FW International Airport in 2005. DART operates a fleet of 13 rail vehicles, each carrying up to 96 passengers. The stainless steel rail diesel vehicles feature big, upholstered chairs with armrests, wide aisles, luggage racks and climate control. Public Hearing on Bus Route 203 With the expansion of commuter rail service, DART is proposing the elimination of bus route 203 which runs from the South Irving Transit Center to DART's West Transfer Center in downtown Dallas. Service on the 203 is scheduled to end on January 4, 1998, if the DART Board of Directors approves the elimination of service. DART has scheduled a public hearing to receive community input on the proposal. The hearing is set for Tuesday, December 9, at 6:30 p.m., in the DART Board Room, 1401 Pacific Avenue, Dallas.
