During the city's early years, this southern Dallas neighborhood was named "Cedars" because of the magnificent forest of conifer trees. It later became one of the first suburbs of Dallas, filled with ornate Victorian homes. Today, the neighborhood has been revitalized with the South Side on Lamar residential and retail development, the Dallas Police Headquarters, the Gilley's Dallas nightclub and Poor David's Pub.

The vast garden-style community is spread over 337 acres and is home to more than 10,000 residents. The communities are affiliated with the Village Country Club, a facility that features a fitness center, an Olympic-sized pool and a full-service bar and restaurant. The community also features a 21-acre greenbelt with six miles of jogging trails.
