Celebrate National Bike Month in May
DART, T participate in Bike to Work events
Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and the Fort Worth T are encouraging North Texans to try a two-wheel commute by biking to work or try cycling for fun, fitness or transportation during May's 2011 National Bike Month, and especially during Bike to Work Week beginning May 16, and Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 20.
Bike enthusiasts are invited to join DART and the T at CentrePort/DFW Airport Station on Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 a.m. for commuter appreciation coffee and donuts sponsored by REI. REI is hosting the event to bring awareness to Bike to Work Day. Representatives from the North Texas Clean Air Coalition will also be there to provide information about how clean commuting choices can help improve regional air quality.
Biking to work makes more sense than ever considering all of the region's bus and rail connections. With bike racks on every DART and T bus, it is easy to combine bicycles and transit. Up to two can be stored in each new rack, which cyclists can load and unload themselves.
Bicyclists can also travel on DART Rail and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE). Low-floor DART rail cars make it easy to roll the bike directly onto the train. The cars feature more standing room but also hooks made especially for stowing bikes while riding the rails. In addition, DART is installing more than 140 bike lids at LRT stations throughout the service area. A bike rider can ride to the station and store their bike under the lid and lock it with their own lock, then access the train.
